Anonymous Said To Be Unstoppable — But For The Wrong Reasons

Late on Friday afternoon, Nicole Perlroth of the New York Times posted a piece to the ‘Bits’ blog titled, “Anonymous Says It Knocked C.I.A. Offline”. Within the post, in reference to the latest Anonymous activity, she quotes Jerry Irvine, member of the National Cyber Security Task Force as saying, “This is going to happen more and more frequently — they’re unstoppable. Why can’t they be stopped? Because security technologies have not kept up with the extent of the vulnerabilities that exist.”

Whether Anonymous is or is not unstoppable is not the question. At times, they certainly seem unstoppable. But to infer that the reason they are unstoppable is because security technologies have not kept pace with the extent of the vulnerabilities that exist is absurd.

Case in point: It has been estimated that less than 10% of the world’s databases actually have any security measures implemented beyond native security technologies. Perhaps Mr. Irvine meant to say, “Organizations that have not invested and kept up with the security technologies available to them are rendering Anonymous unstoppable.”

One thing I think we’d all agree on is that Anonymous and any other motivated attackers will continue to have their way with those organizations that do not put the proper security technologies and processes in place.
